A Royal Affair (2012)

  • I love the softness/lightness of the film quality, especially in the beginning.
  • The music reminds me of PRIDE & PREJUDICE (2005). (Same time period, so I guess this makes sense.)
  • The design of the subtitles is ugly.
  • This story has everything! Forbidden romance! Truth! Veracity! A powerhouse couple trying to influence politics for the good of the people!
  • The actor who plays the King (Mikkel Boe Følsgaard) is excellent.
  • And, of course, so are Alicia Vikander and Mads Mikkelsen, who play the Queen and the Doctor, respectively.
  • The structure of the film works really well. Organized incorrectly, the story could have been a lot drier & much less engaging – the most compelling parts could easily have been lost, but weren’t.
  • I have to point out that the minor character actors do a great job, too.
  • The ending scenes (or nearly ending scenes) of Mikkelson and Vikander solidify their performances. Really phenomenal stuff.
  • Beautifully made movie – but horribly depressing. This is one that I’d have a hard time recommending, because even though it’s great – do I really want to be responsible for people being really, really sad afterwards? I dunno. Always a tough call.
